How to Apply to Australian Universities: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

Application routes

Unlike the UK (UCAS) or USA (Common App), Australia does not have a single national undergraduate application system. International students typically apply via:

  1. Direct university portals — most international applications go here
  2. State admission centres (for domestic applicants and some international undergraduate):
    • NSW/ACT: Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)
    • Victoria: VTAC
    • Queensland: QTAC
    • WA: TISC

For postgraduate coursework and research degrees, all applications are direct to the university.

Required documents

Standard documents for most Australian universities:

  • Official academic transcripts (translated into English if necessary)
  • English proficiency score (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1/C2)
  • Statement of purpose (for postgraduate programmes, typically 500–1,000 words)
  • Two references (academic preferred; professional references accepted for work-experience programmes)
  • CV/résumé (postgraduate applications, especially MBA and executive programmes)
  • Passport copy
  • Research proposal (for PhD/research master’s applications)

Deadlines

IntakeCourse startApplication deadline
Semester 1Late FebruaryOctober–November of prior year

Recommendation: International students should submit 6–9 months before the start date to allow time for visa processing.

Academic entry requirements

Go8 universities for undergraduate entry typically require:

  • China: 高考 score of 580–620+ (varies by province and university)
  • India: 80–90%+ in Class XII board exams
  • UK: A*AA–AAB at A-Level depending on course
  • USA: SAT 1350+ / ACT 30+

Postgraduate coursework: GPA equivalent to 3.0–3.3/4.0 for standard entry, 3.5+ for competitive programmes.

Statement of purpose tips

A strong statement addresses:

  1. Your academic background and why this field
  2. Specific research interests or professional goals
  3. Why this university (mention faculty, labs or industry links)
  4. What you plan to do with the degree

Avoid vague phrases like “to broaden my horizons.” Be specific.

Applying to multiple universities

There is no restriction or additional fee for applying to multiple Australian universities simultaneously. Apply to a range — two or three stretch schools, two likely and one safety. Most universities give a decision within 4–8 weeks of receiving a complete application.
